Ellie agreed. “Dr. Purvis said to let her know if it was crying out,” Ellie said. “Or lying stretched out on its side.”

But the deer still seemed alert and calm. “I guess it’s doing okay,” Liz said.

Ellie smiled and nodded. “Let’s come see it again tomorrow,” she suggested. “We’ll be here for practice every day this week.”

On Tuesday the team did a lot of fielding drills. Some of the ground balls rolled between Ellie’s legs. And she had a tough time catching pop flies. She kept losing sight of the ball in the air.
